What Is Clear Aligner Treatment?

A digital simulation visualises a treatment objective; it does not guarantee biological movement or an exact final result. The plan may need to be updated during treatment.

What Are Attachments, IPR and Elastics?

Attachments

Small tooth-coloured composite shapes may be placed on teeth to help an aligner apply selected movements more effectively.

IPR

In suitable cases, a very small amount of enamel may be adjusted between teeth to create space. The need and amount are determined during planning.

Elastics

Small orthodontic elastics may be used with aligners to help manage selected bite relationships.

How Many Hours Should Aligners Be Worn?

Most plans require aligners to be worn for the majority of each day. The prescribed duration varies, but it is commonly around 20–22 hours daily. Aligners are removed for meals, drinks other than water and oral hygiene.

Insufficient wear can prevent planned movements, reduce fit and extend treatment.

How Often Are Aligners Changed?

The change interval is not the same for every patient. It is determined according to the planned movement, aligner fit and biological response. Aligners should not be changed earlier than instructed.

Eating and Drinking with Aligners

Aligners should be removed for meals. Drinks other than water may increase sugar or acid exposure beneath the aligner and can affect its colour or shape. Teeth should be cleaned before the aligners are replaced.

How Should Aligners Be Cleaned?

Rinse with cool or lukewarm water.
Do not use very hot water.
Follow the recommended cleaning method.
Store aligners in their case when removed.
Brush and clean between teeth regularly.
Contact the clinic if an aligner cracks, is lost or no longer fits.

Does Clear Aligner Treatment Hurt?

Pressure or tenderness may be felt for a few days after changing to a new aligner. Sharp edges, ulcers, severe pain or symptoms that persist should be assessed.

Clear Aligners or Braces?

Aligners are removable, while fixed braces remain on the teeth. Patient compliance is central to aligner treatment. Fixed appliances may offer more direct control for selected complex movements.

Can Additional Aligners Be Required?

Do not move to the next aligner without advice or remain without an aligner for an extended period. The orthodontist should advise which aligner to use and whether the plan needs to be modified.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

Duration depends on the extent of crowding and bite correction, required movements, aligner wear and biological response. An exact duration cannot be provided before assessment and planning.

Retention After Clear Aligners

Fixed or removable retainers are planned after active treatment to help maintain the new tooth positions. Unwanted movement can occur without retention. The type and duration are individualised.
